Since being conferred the groundbreaking denomination in 2016, Honduran longfillers are now classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In the background a pioneering distinction for the cigar industry was garnered in October 2016. The country of Honduras conferred its handrolled longfillers the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic.
Article 2 of the decree states: “That cigars – a handcrafted product – made of leaf tobacco are hereby declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic for all purposes of international competitiveness policies, and taking into account the role that this industry plays in strengthening the identity of our export products, which are well known and sought-after worldwide, given their quality, excellence, and origin; and taking into account their contribution to social and economic development by increasing economic activity and creating jobs in the country.”
Taking a leading role in this development and ultimately responsible for the successful result was none other than cigar producer Maya Selva.
