Great Art In A Small Place

Cigar boxes are particularly fascinating for the artist Gudrun Epp.

Cigar boxes are particularly fascinating for the artist Gudrun Epp. Inspired by “these lovely specimens that exude warmth and comfort,” in the opened boxes she creates space for art. “I like them for their finiteness, their various forms of design and color, for their signs of wear, their scent, because they are closeable and can hold secrets. What can’t you keep inside them? Treasures of all kinds, but also products born of creative processes, imaginative objects that are complemented with drawings or paintings,” the former teacher explains enthusiastically. Gudrun Epp designs small, touching little rooms, which can also be a bit playful, sensuous, poetic, concrete, and sometimes a bit dark. “Before I decorate a cigar box – with the ugly labels removed – there is usually an idea. These can be three-dimensional figures made from paper or self-designed or found objects that are knead-ed, folded, painted and waxed,” Epp says, explaining the creative artistic process. These objects “seek” a cigar box that they can fit into. All boxes can be open or closed and also be hung or presented standing.
