Matilde Special Release Pays Tribute to Company Founder

After retiring from his position as General Manager of Tabacalera de Garcias, Jose Seijas founded Matilde Cigars in 2014, reviving a fabled old brand that had been established in 1876. Fast forward a decade later, and Jose’s son, Enrique, is heading Matilde Cigars, which includes four regular production lines—the original Renacer, Serena, Quadrata and Oscura—and the twice yearly Limited Exposure cigar.

For 2024, Matilde Cigars is adding another limited edition to its lineup that pays tribute to Enrique’s father, Jose. Matilde Cigars’ Special Release is a Toro (6 x 50) that is made from an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru. It’s the Peruvian tobacco in the blend that pays tribute to Enrique’s father, Jose.

“This is the first Matilde Cigar to feature tobacco from Peru,” Enrique explains. “My father loves Peruvian tobacco and this cigar is meant to honor him. We chose some elements from the Seijas Signature series cigar for our first Special Release, so in a lot of ways, this cigar is very similar to my dad.”

Made by Tabacalera La Isla in Santiago, Dominican Republic and packaged in 24-count boxes, there are only 5,000 of the first shipment for Matilde Special Edition cigars available.
